The 5 most expensive misses in Compak Sporting
After enough scored rounds, the same patterns show up again and again. These are the five mistakes that cost shooters the most clays — and the fix for each one.
1. Carrying your stance across stands
The most common leak on a Compak layout. Your feet were set for the previous stand's trajectory, so you start every target already behind it.
The fix: Re-set your feet on every single stand. Pick your hold point, then build the stance around where you'll break the clay — not where you happened to be standing.
2. Stopping the gun on rabbits
Rabbits bounce, and the moment they hop, most shooters check the swing. A stopped barrel on a moving target is a lost target.
The fix: Commit to follow-through through the bounce. Practise ten minutes of rabbits before a competition with one rule: the gun never stops moving until the shot is gone.
3. Rushing the second bird of a sim pair
You break the first clay cleanly, then snap at the second before the gun is back in your shoulder properly. The miss feels unlucky; it isn't.
The fix: Treat the pair as two singles. Break the first, re-mount deliberately, then shoot the second on your terms — even late. A smooth late kill beats a rushed early miss.
4. Lifting your head on the 'easy' going-away bird
The straightaway teal or going-away target looks done before it is. Shooters lift their head to watch it break — and it doesn't.
The fix: Stay in the gun until you see the pieces. Discipline on the easy targets is where 24s become 25s.
5. No plan for wind on long crossers
Long crossers move with the wind all day, and most shooters hold the same lead they used on the last squad. The target isn't where your picture says it is.
